Homemade tomato sauce

Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, chopped

4 cloves garlic, chopped

6 cups fresh ripe tomatoes, chopped (or 2 cans diced tomatoes, 28 ounces each)

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1/2 teaspoon salt

 

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/4 teaspoon ground red pepper (optional, for spiciness)

Fresh basil or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the ingredients

Heat the olive oil : Heat the olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet or saucepan.

Cook the onion and garlic : Add the chopped onion and cook for 5-7 minutes or until tender and translucent. Add the chopped garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

 

Step 2: Cook the tomatoes

To add the tomatoes: Stir in the chopped tomatoes (or chopped canned tomatoes), tomato paste, sugar, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, and chili powder as desired.
