Ingredients
For approximately eight to ten glasses you will need:
1 large, ripe watermelon
500 g fresh strawberries
2 liters well-chilled mineral water
150 ml strawberry syrup
Ice cubes as desired
Optional garnish:
Fresh mint leaves
A few strawberry slices
Small melon balls
Lemon slices
Preparation
Before I start, I put the mineral water in the refrigerator a few hours beforehand. A really cold punch simply tastes best on hot days.
First, I halve the watermelon with a large knife. Then I remove as many seeds as possible. Next, I cut the flesh out of the rind and dice it. I set some of the cubes aside, as they will later float in the punch as a fruity garnish. I purée the remaining cubes with an immersion blender until I have a wonderfully smooth melon cream.
Meanwhile, I carefully wash the strawberries under cold water. Only then do I remove the green leaves. This helps retain as much flavor as possible. I halve larger strawberries and leave smaller ones whole. This makes the punch look especially beautiful later.
Now I put the melon puree into a large glass bowl. I add the prepared strawberries as well. Then I pour the strawberry syrup over it and add about half of the sparkling water. I stir everything together carefully so that the strawberries remain as whole as possible.
Now comes the most important part: patience. The punch should chill in the refrigerator for at least three to four hours. During this time, the flavors of the strawberries and melon meld together. This makes the drink taste significantly more intense than immediately after mixing.
Just before the guests arrive, I take the punch out of the refrigerator again. Now I pour in the remaining mineral water and add plenty of ice cubes. I stir everything carefully one last time.
Finally, I scatter some fresh mint leaves on the surface. They not only create a beautiful appearance but also give the punch a pleasantly fresh note.
The punch is served in large glasses, so that each glass contains some strawberries and pieces of melon. That’s precisely what makes it so appealing to me. You don’t just drink the punch, but also enjoy the wonderfully infused fruit afterwards.
My personal tips
After many summers, I’ve discovered a few little tricks that make the punch even better.
The riper the watermelon, the more intense the flavor of the drink. Therefore, it’s worth taking some time when shopping and selecting a flavorful melon.
The strawberries should also be as sweet and fully ripe as possible. During the season, I prefer to buy them directly at the weekly market. They usually taste particularly intense there.
For a smoother consistency, you can strain the melon puree through a sieve. Personally, however, I like the natural fruit texture and usually skip this step.
It also looks very nice if you form some small melon balls with a melon baller and add them to the punch just before serving.
Finally
This strawberry punch has become one of the drinks that heralds summer for me. As soon as the first local strawberries are available and a sweet watermelon finds its place on the kitchen table, I know that the warm season has begun.
Perhaps that’s its greatest secret. It’s uncomplicated, wonderfully fruity, and brings people together. Everyone grabs a glass, sits on the patio or in the garden, and enjoys the moment. Often, the most beautiful memories are made on such simple occasions.
For me, this punch is no longer just a recipe. It’s become an integral part of our summers, our family celebrations, and our afternoons spent together in the garden. And every time the large glass bowl is completely empty, I’m reminded why this drink has been one of our absolute favorite recipes for years.
