The funny thing is, I actually discovered this recipe quite spontaneously. A few years ago, we were planning a barbecue with friends. Everyone was supposed to bring something. Some took care of salads, others bread or desserts. I really wanted to prepare a drink that not only tasted good but could also be enjoyed by both children and adults. Many punches contain alcohol, but on this particular afternoon, everyone—even the youngest—should be able to drink from the same punch bowl.
So I started thinking about which fruits go particularly well together. Strawberries were an immediate choice, as they’re simply part of summer for me. But what could I combine them with? While shopping, my eye was caught by a beautiful, ripe watermelon. Even just lifting it, I could feel how heavy and juicy it was. At home, I cut it open, and immediately that wonderfully sweet aroma filled the entire kitchen. In that moment, I knew that strawberries and melon would be a perfect match.
I pureed some of the melon, added fresh strawberries, and finished it all off with a little strawberry syrup and sparkling water. To be honest, I was curious myself whether it would actually make a good punch. After all, I didn’t want to serve a drink that only looked pretty but had hardly any flavor.
When our guests arrived, the large glass bowl was already chilled and sitting on the table. Bright red strawberries floated among the small pieces of melon, while countless tiny bubbles of carbonation rose to the surface. The punch was a real eye-catcher. No sooner had it been poured than the first friend asked for the recipe. Before the grill was even properly hot, I had to refill the bowl a second time.
Since that afternoon, I’ve made this punch every year. It’s become as much a part of our barbecues as fresh bread or a colorful salad. What I especially love is that it’s completely alcohol-free and yet still looks incredibly festive. Nobody misses the wine or sparkling wine because the fruity flavors are perfectly sufficient.
On hot summer days, there’s hardly anything better than a large glass of ice-cold strawberry-melon punch. Even the first sip is wonderfully refreshing. The natural sweetness of the melon blends beautifully with the slightly tart strawberries. The mineral water keeps the drink pleasantly light and sparkling.
What I also love is how easy it is to prepare. You don’t need any special equipment or complicated ingredients. Everything you need can be found in almost any supermarket or farmers’ market during strawberry season. And that’s exactly what makes this recipe so special for me. It proves once again that the simplest ideas are often the best.
This punch isn’t just popular at barbecues anymore. I serve it at birthdays, family gatherings, garden parties, or simply when we’re sitting together on the patio on a warm afternoon. I often even make a double batch because I know by now that the first bowl will be empty in no time.
Children especially love this drink. It’s probably due to the natural sweetness of the fruit and the fact that they get to eat the little pieces of strawberry from the glass with a spoon after drinking it. My nieces look forward to it every time and even help cut the strawberries now. This has turned the preparation into almost a little family ritual.
The punch is also visually stunning. The vibrant red strawberries, the delicate pink of the melon puree, and the fresh mint leaves combine to create a drink that instantly evokes the feeling of summer. And when ice cubes clink in the glass and tiny droplets of water form on the outside, even an ordinary afternoon feels like a mini-vacation.
