Ingredients

For the dough
• 4 cups all-purpose flour (500g)
• ½ cup butter or margarine (113g)
• 2 tablespoons sugar (25g)
• 1 teaspoon salt (5g)
• 2 teaspoons instant yeast (7g)
• 1 cup warm milk (240ml)
• 1 large egg (50g)

For the filling
• 10–12 sausages
• 1 egg for brushing (50g)
• 1 tablespoon milk (15ml), optional

Instructions
• Combine the flour, sugar, salt and yeast in a bowl.
• Add the butter and rub it into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
• Add the egg and warm milk gradually, mixing until a soft dough forms.
• Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic.
• Cover and allow to rest for about 45–60 minutes, or until slightly risen.
• Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface into a rectangle.
• Cut the dough into long strips wide enough to wrap around each sausage.
• Place a sausage on each strip and roll the dough around it, sealing the edge gently.
• Arrange the rolls on a lined baking tray, leaving space between them.
• Brush the tops with beaten egg mixed with a little milk.
• Allow them to rest for another 15–20 minutes.
• Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown.
• Allow to cool slightly and serve with your favorite dipping sauce.

Tip: For an extra-soft and shiny finish, brush the freshly baked sausage rolls lightly with melted butter.
